Decade of renewal
Safe, well-maintained streets mean easier journeys, fewer hazards, and a better quality of life for all who live, work, and travel in Wandsworth.
In February 2024, Wandsworth Council launched an ambitious 10-year improvement programme to transform the borough’s roads and pavements. Since then, we have doubled the annual investment in maintaining our roads and pavements from £4.75m in 2023/2024 to £10.25million in 2025/26.
After years of wear and tear, this plan is dedicated to making our streets safer, smoother, and more accessible for everyone.
What we've done so far
During the first year of the programme (April 2024 to April 2025), the council invested over £8m to improve roads and pavements and refurbished 114 roads and pavements across the borough.
In the 2025 to 2026 period, we invested a record £10.25m in road and pavement maintenance works, to fund:
- Resurfacing over 136,000 m² of road
- Refurbishing over 60,000 m² of pavements
- Replacing and repairing approximately 1,000 street name signs, including 400 heritage street name plates. Repairing and replacing street name plates is part of our 7 rings, 7 days guarantee
- Repairing 500 streetlights
- Renewed all road markings on Classified roads (commonly known as A and B roads)
- Repairing 1,140 potholes, with 100% of dangerous reported potholes being fixed within 7 days as part of our 7 rings, 7 days guarantee
This phase of the work is currently ongoing and due to be complete by April 2026.
